Etymology

Folklore says in the early 16th century, there were two settlements in the area: one north of the river and one south. Both had their own cabeza (headman). In the south settlement, there was a young woman named Aring who was the daughter of the headman. In the north, there was a young man named Ayong who was also the son of a headman. One day, Ayong saw Aring while taking a bath in the river. By means of messengers, the two met during a feast celebrated in the south, and fell in love. They both secretly met at dusk in the river riding a boat. This has to be a secret due to their parents in disagreement over their respective settlements.

One day, both of them agreed to meet at the river bend east to their settlements at the next New Moon to plan their elopement and marriage. At dusk, on unfair weather, they slowly paddled upstream to the bend. The night comes, and the two did not mind that the drizzle became rain. They decided to return home as the rain strengthened. Just as their boats parted, headwaters came rushing in and capsizing Aring's boat, causing Aring to jump into the water. Ayong, unable to do anything, shouted "Aring ay Aring!". Ayong jumped to save Aring, and brought to her house just as people along the riverbank came out to find out what happened.

The headman of the south came out to witness the event. To the shouts of his people, he announced that he was giving permission to Aring to become the wife of Ayong, and that preparations will start for the feast. The headman of the north sensed something unusual in the south, so they crossed the river to find out why. As they reached ashore, he met the headman of the south together with Aring and Ayong. The life-saving story overjoyed the headman of the north and also announced that he too was giving permission for his son to marry Ayong.

The two headman agreed to join their settlements to become Aringay in honor of their children.
