Algirdas
Lithuanian
Alternative forms
- Elgirdas
Etymology
(Baltic origin:) Composed of the two stems al̃ (“each, every”) + girdė́ti (“to hear”). The name is widely considered to have been adapted into Old Ruthenian as Олъгердъ (Olherd), as confirmed by Kazimieras Būga.[1] This suggests an ancient origin that predates its documented appearance in East Slavic languages.
(Germanic origin:) Some Germanist scholars, especially Aleksandra Superanskaya, claimed that the name Algirdas and its Slavic cognates are counterparts of German Adelger. This perspective disputes analyses that construct the name solely from Balto-Slavic onomastics.[2]
