Acireale

English

Proper noun

Acireale

  1. A coastal city and comune in Sicily.

Italian

Etymology

From Latin Acis Aquilia. The first element derives from Ancient Greek Ἄκις (Ákis), the name of a river in Sicily and its mythological shepherd, who according to Ovid was transformed into the river at his death. The second element comes from Latin Aquilia, the Roman name for the settlement. In the 17th century, the town was granted royal status by Philip IV of Spain, becoming known as Aci Reale ("Royal Aci"), which later evolved into the modern form.
