Many names were proposed by ZA Terminoloģijas komisija, including, VIDS - virāla imūndeficīta sindroms, sarglaupe, imūnkaile, imūnkailums, imunokaile, imunokailums, AIS - antimūnsindroms, antimūns, bezimunitāte, bezimunitātes slimība, bezimūnkaite, imizorgs - "imunitātes izzudums organismā," imūndeficīts, imunitātes grāvējs, imunitātes zude, imūnkaite, imunozude, imūntrūce, imūnzude, mērlis, nonimuna, sargzude, limfšūngande or shorter gande.
Eventually AIDS, a declinable form aidss and mērlis (as an "emotionally captivating" alternative) were officially approved for use by Terminoloģijas komisija. Only the acronym is currently in use. First attested in the October 1986.[1]

- AIDS is a shortened name for the new disease (from English "Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome"). A group of US doctors in the State of California were the first to encounter this disease in June, 1981.
