Reconstruction:Luwian/marwatar
Luwian
Etymology
Uncertain, but probably inherited. Possibly related to Ancient Greek ἀμαυρός (amaurós, “dark”), Latin umbra (“shadow, shade”). However, Kloekhorst connect this and related Hittite words to Proto-Indo-European *mergʷ- (“to flicker; to darken”). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
Noun
*marwatar (nominative-accusative singular)
Usage notes
- Only the dative-locative singular is attested.
Inflection
- (dative/locative singular): 𒈠𒅈𒉿𒋫𒉌 (ma-ar-wa-ta-ni)
