From English Spain, ultimately from Latin Hispania, via Spanish España. Older Korean forms include 서반아 (西班牙, seobana), a calque from the Chinese name (西班牙). The variant 에스파냐 (eseupanya) is a direct borrowing from Spanish España.

• In modern Korean, 스페인 (seupein) is the most common form, especially in South Korea, while 에스파냐 (eseupanya) is sometimes used in formal or literary contexts.
• The obsolete form 서반아 (seobana) reflects the old Chinese-based transcription 西班牙.
• Playfully, some Korean linguists and students note that the country's name begins with sp-, like spit, spoon, or sport, and joke that Sp- words “spit you into Spain.” This is of course a coincidence, but often used as a mnemonic for students.
