Etymology
From Calque of English telescreen, from 電 / 电 (diàn, “tele- + ”) + 幕 (mù, “screen”). See television / 電視 / 电视 (diànshì). Popularized by George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), in which they are used for government surveillance of citizens.
