斯民

1. (literary) the people

   • 無麥無禾，歲且荐飢，獄訟繁興，而盜賊滋熾，則吾與二三子，雖欲優游以樂於此亭，其可得邪？今天不遺斯民，始旱而賜之以雨，使吾與二三子得相與優游而樂於此亭者，皆雨之賜也。 [Literary Chinese, trad.]

     Wú mài wú hé, suì qiě jiànjī, yùsòng fánxīng, ér dàozéi zī chì, zé wú yǔ èrsānzǐ, suī yù yōuyóu yǐ lè yú cǐ tíng, qí kědé yé? Jīn tiān bù yí sīmín, shǐ hàn ér cì zhī yǐ yǔ, shǐ wú yǔ èrsānzǐ dé xiāngyǔ yōuyóu ér lèyú cǐ tíng zhě, jiē yǔ zhī cì yě. [Pinyin]

     Had there been harvest neither of wheat nor of rice, a famine must inevitably have ensued. The law court would have overflowed with litigation. Brigandage and robbery would have been rife. And you and I would have missed the pleasant meeting of to-day beneath this arbour. But Heaven did not leave the people to perish. Drought has been followed by rain; and to rain it is due that we are here enjoying ourselves to-day.
