Etymology
By surface analysis, 地獄 (jigoku, “hell”) + の (no, possessive/attributive particle) + 沙汰 (sata, “dealings, resolution”) + も (mo, “even”) + 金 (kane, “money”) + 次第 (shidai, “according, up/down to”), literally “even dealing with hell is down to money”. Mythologically, it was believed that when one dies, one would cross the Sanzu river, meet the god of death Enma, and be judged by him to determine whether one will go to heaven or hell. It was possible to significantly ameliorate one's chances through bribery, however, thus "even dealing with hell" could be achieved through money, suggesting that any worldly pursuit could be as well.
In its current form this term has existed since the Edo period.
