Translingual
Diacritical mark
◌̞
- (IPA) Indicates lowered articulation, e.g. a more open vowel, or an approximant rather than a fricative.
- (phonetics, rare, diacritic above) A transcription convention of John Peabody Harrington for mid pitch; this avoids the confusion of the IPA macron, which in many conventions indicates voweel length.
Usage notes
- (IPA): When the base letter descends past the baseline, the obsolete spacing diacritic ⟨˕⟩ or a diacritic above ⟨◌⟩ may be used instead, as in ⟨y⟩ or ⟨ɣ⟩.
