Etymology
From Pali abhipāla (“protector”), from abhi (“over; upon; etc”) + pāla (“guardian; keeper; custodian; etc”), or from Sanskrit अभिपाल (abhipāla, idem), अभि (abhi, idem) + पाल (pāla, idem), equivalent to Thai อภิ (à-pí) + บาล (baan). Cognate with Khmer អភិបាល (ʼaʼphibaal).
