Etymology

From Proto-Tai *dopᴰ (to fold double).[1]

Cognate with Lao ທົບ (thop), Shan တူပ်ႉ (tṵ̂up), Tai Nüa ᥖᥨᥙ (top), Zhuang doeb (double; to fold). Note also similarities to Middle Chinese (MC dep, “to fold in layers”).
