Etymology
From Proto-Tai *dopᴰ (“to fold double”).[1]
Cognate with Lao ທົບ (thop), Shan တူပ်ႉ (tṵ̂up), Tai Nüa ᥖᥨᥙ (top), Zhuang doeb (“double; to fold”). Note also similarities to Middle Chinese 疊 (MC dep, “to fold in layers”).
