From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɟuːꟲ² (“lover; adulterer”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨩᩪ᩶, Khün ᨩᩪ᩶, Lao ຊູ້ (sū), Lü ᦋᦴᧉ (tsuu²), Shan ၸူႉ (tsṵ̂u), Tai Nüa ᥓᥧᥳ (tsu̇), Ahom 𑜋𑜥 (chū).
