A merging of two etymons.
- Inherited from Prakrit 𑀚𑁄𑀬𑀇 (joyaï), from Sanskrit द्योतते (dyótate, “to shine”).
- Inherited from Sanskrit *योक्षति (*yokṣati, “to ponder”) (aorist अयोक्षीत् (ayokṣīt)). Cognate to Hindi जोहना (johnā, “to look for”).
