ܦܘܠܘܣ

Assyrian Neo-Aramaic

Etymology

Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܦܘܠܘܣ, from Ancient Greek Παῦλος (Paûlos), from Latin Paulus. The emphatic /pˤ/ is there due to the original Greek π (p) being an unaspirated /p˭/, a consonant foreign to Syriac and Assyrian Neo-Aramaic phonology and later rendered as an emphatic /pˤ/ in the east.
