я̈

Russian

Letter

я̈ • () (lower case, upper case Я̈)

  1. (obsolete, pre-1918 spelling) The letter я with a diaeresis.

Usage notes

In the pre-1918 orthography, the letter я (ja) was pronounced like ё (jo) in the words ея (jeja) and нея (neja). A diaeresis was optionally used to indicate this, similarly to ѣ̈ () and ё. The reform has replaced every instance of that letter by ё.
