Etymology

Inherited from Old Slovak počitovať, originally the imperfective form of počítať (i.e. почитац pf (počitac, to count; to read) +‎ -овац (-ovac)), most likely further semantically influenced by Carpathian Rusyn почита́ти (počytáty). Compare Macedonian почитува (počituva), Russian почита́ть (počitátʹ) and Serbo-Croatian поштовати / poštovati.
