Inherited from Old East Slavic ничьто (ničĭto), from Proto-Slavic *ničьto. By surface analysis, univerbation of ні (ni, “not”) +‎ що (ščo, “what”). Compare Belarusian нішто́ (ništó), Russian ничто́ (ništó) and Polish nic. Parsable as ні- (ni-) +‎ що (ščo).
