гатоўнасць

Belarusian

Alternative forms

Etymology

From гато́вы (hatóvy) +‎ -насць (-nascʹ). Compare Bulgarian гото́вност (gotóvnost), Russian гото́вность (gotóvnostʹ) and Ukrainian гото́вність (hotóvnistʹ).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ɣaˈtou̯nasʲt͡sʲ]
  • Rhymes: -ou̯nasʲt͡sʲ

Noun

гато́ўнасць • (hatównascʹf inan (genitive гато́ўнасці, uncountable)

  1. readiness, preparedness
у баяво́й гато́ўнасціu bajavój hatównascion alert (literally, “in combat readiness”)
  2. eagerness, willingness, desire to do something
    вы́сказаць гато́ўнасцьvýskazacʹ hatównascʹto express willingness

Usage notes

  • This form with the rebracketed -насць (-nascʹ) instead of -асць (-ascʹ) is likely due to Russian influence. The alternative form гато́васць (hatóvascʹ) is formed with -асць (-ascʹ), and more closely resembles Polish gotowość, which see also Ukrainian гото́вість (hotóvistʹ). Regardless, the vast majority of dictionaries only record the -насць (-nascʹ) form.
  • Both гато́ўнасьць (hatównasʹcʹ) and гато́васьць (hatóvasʹcʹ) seem to be valid Taraškievica variants, and both forms have been at different times used by the media outlet Радыё Свабода (Radyjó Svabóda).
