Etymology

Most likely borrowed from Carpathian Rusyn Ізра́їл (Izrájil), ultimately from Ancient Greek Ἰσρᾱήλ (Isrāḗl), from Hebrew ישראל (yisra'él). Compare Russian Изра́иль (Izráilʹ), Ukrainian Ізра́їль (Izrájilʹ).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [izˈrajil]
  • Rhymes: -ajil
  • Hyphenation: Из‧ра‧їл

Proper noun

Израїл (Izrajilm inan (related adjective израїлски)

  1. Israel (a country in Western Asia in the Middle East, at the eastern shore of the Mediterranean)

Usage notes

  • More commonly used than Израел (Izrael) in general. Some speakers may differentiate the two forms, using Израїл (Izrajil) for biblical Israel and Израел (Izrael) for the modern State of Israel, but the former is nonetheless the form preferred by RTV Vojvodina in news articles.
