1. (IPA) The hook tail that is characteristic of a retroflex consonant.

This diacritic should only be used when a dedicated character does not exist. The following characters are not canonically equivalent to the base letters plus ⟨◌̢⟩.

A vowel letter with a hook tail now typically transcribes the allophone of a vowel next to a retroflex consonant, but historically such letters were used for rhotic vowels.

Unicode characters with a hook tail are,

lower case:

• (consonant) 𝼝, ɖ, ᶑ, ꭦ, 𝼙, ɭ, ꞎ, 𝼅, ɳ, ɋ, ɽ, ɻ, 𝼈, ʂ, ᶘ, ʈ, 𝼉, ꭧ, 𝼜, ʐ, ᶚ, 𝼊
• (vowel) ᶏ, ᶐ, ᶗ, ᶒ, ᶕ, ᶓ, ᶔ, ᶖ, 𝼚, ʅ, 𝼛, ᶙ, ʯ

upper case:

• Ɋ, Ɽ, Ʂ, Ʈ

and superscript:

• 𐞋, 𐞍, 𐞈, ᶩ, 𐞝, 𐞟, 𐞨, ʵ, 𐞧, ᶯ, ᶳ, 𐞯, 𐞭, ᶼ, 𐞹.

In some typefaces the Karlgren letters ʅ and ʯ do not have a hook tail but rather a ⟨t⟩-like terminal curl.
