Place the figures as follows, allowing as many columns to each denomination as the highest figure in that unit will occupy:—

Multiply 5 Yards by 3 Feet, placing the product 15 over the foot column. Then, you obtain 17 Feet, to which multiply 12. Put the product over the Inch columns and now you have the answer 213 Inches.

Reduction ascending.

Reduce 7858 Pence to Pounds.

Place the number and divide by 12. Then you obtain 654/- and 10 d., the unit of shilling being in B on division. Next, divide 654/- by 20 and you obtain £32 and remainder 14/-, the unit of Pound being in the next higher column to A on division. Answer £32.14.10.
