Woodpecker
A woodpecker was a Earth bird that was recognized by the tapping sounds it made against trees while searching for insects to eat.
In 2401, while complaining about life on Nepenthe, Deanna Troi and William T. Riker described how horrible Nepenthian red-winged banshees sounded in the morning, likening them to "screaming babies". They then mused, "You know what they say, the only thing worse than a woodpecker… is a two-headed woodpecker." (PIC: "Surrender")
In the script for the Star Trek: The Next Generation first season episode "The Big Goodbye", Felix Leech’s knuckles knocking on Dixon Hill’s door are described as "sounding like a woodpecker rapping on a hollow tree". [1]
