Vernon Smith is a comic book artist for IDW Publishing. He attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts in high school and was a Fine Arts major at the University of New Orleans.

After college, he began self-publishing comic books through Diamond Comic Distributors, releasing such titles as "The Adventures of Dexter Breakfast" and "Return Of The Lovin' Dead". In 2015 he started illustrating children's books for Pelican Publishing. His works included The King Cake Baby, The Littlest Streetcar, When the Morning Comes, and Jokes For Crescent City Kids, among others. In 2020 he returned to indie comics and illustrated the creator-owned five issue mini-series titled Bigfoot Frankenstein, published by Action Lab Entertainment. In 2023, he did his first work with IDW Publishing, illustrating a cover for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Halloween Special.

As a lifelong Trekkie, his career dream came true in 2024 when he illustrated the Strange New Worlds story in Star Trek, issue 500. In 2025, that dream continued when he was hired to draw Star Trek: Lower Decks #9 and Star Trek: Lower Decks #10.

He is currently probably listening to a Star Trek soundtrack.
