The ventilation grid was a component of the life support systems aboard Cold Station 12.

In 2154, Malik set the station's stasis fields containing dangerous pathogens to shut down, exposing the crew. Senior medical director Jeremy Lucas explained that the ventilation grid would have carried the pathogens throughout the station, including the central core, until Captain Jonathan Archer was able to isolate the station's main lab.
