Twaining
A session of Twaining in progress.
"Twaining" was a form of conflict resolution that was developed in 2381. It involved two individuals playing Mark Twain in a holoprogram, and as the two talked in his famous witticisms, they found common ground.
Twaining was unintentionally created by Lieutenants Bradward Boimler and Samanthan Rutherford of the USS Cerritos as they argued over who should mist their bonsai tree. In order to relax, they decided to partake in a Mark Twain holoprogram aboard the A.B. Chambers, but found they had both dressed as Twain, leading to another argument. They eventually managed to find common ground (somehow).
Not long afterwards, Captain Carol Freeman was in a standoff with a Chalnoth ship. Boimler and Rutherford put them in the Mark Twain program to resolve the situation, but the two captains were unable to get into the role. Humiliated by the experience, Freeman then banned the two from using the Twain program, though they soon started using a Mozart holoprogram in a similar manner. Later that year, Rutherford and Ensign Livik were arguing on how to restore the Orion ship Retribution. Pressed for time, Lieutenant T'Lyn put them both in the Twain program, where they promptly found a compromise. Captain Freeman was still baffled as to how this worked, to which T'Lyn explained that illogical tactics can lead to logical solutions. (LD: "Old Friends, New Planets")
Twaining was still performed by four unidentified Cerritos crewmembers in 2382 following the soliton wave crisis.(LD: "The New Next Generation")
