After Quark brokers a too-good-to-be-true trade for gold-pressed latinum, Deep Space 9 is under fire from at least three different alien races, each accusing the others of theft, piracy, and worse. Then angry Klingons get involved, and so do the Ferengi – placing the entire station in the middle of a shooting war that might consume all of them.

  • The novel is set after the events of "Bar Association". Jake mentions the events of "Explorers".
  • The author commented that the novel was: "was actually two different ideas that one day came rushing together quite handily when I considered doing a Deep Space Nine story. It's really a character story, a very fastpaced one. And the characters on DS9 were terrific". (Voyages of Imagination, p. 127)
  • This novel coins the term trellium many years before Star Trek: Enterprise did.
