Toronto was the capital city of the province of Ontario, and once the biggest city in Canada on Earth.

History

In 2022, Toronto was the location of the Noonien-Singh Institute for Cultural Advancement, which was developing a cold fusion reactor and was also home to the young Khan Noonien Singh. During that time period, it was visited by La'An Noonien-Singh and an alternate timeline James T. Kirk, who were sent there by a dying Department of Temporal Investigations agent to foil a plot to alter Earth history. Kirk mistook Toronto for for New York City, having never been to Earth in his timeline.

During their visit, the city suffered an apparent terrorist attack when the Lake Ontario Bridge was destroyed by an explosion soon after it was completed. The explosion was actually caused by photonic bombs planted by Romulan temporal agents. Kirk and Noonien-Singh were approached by Sera, another Romulan agent tasked with killing Khan Noonien-Singh and thereby preventing the formation of the Federation. She initially intended to detonate the fusion reactor, and when this failed, she tried to assassinate Khan personally. The plot was foiled by Noonien-Singh and Kirk, with both Kirk and Sera being killed.

In an alternate timeline, the city was destroyed in 2022 when Sera detonated the cold fusion reactor. This incident and the resulting death of Khan caused the divergence of the timelines, prevented the Federation from being formed, and led to the devastation and abandonment of Earth. The plaza in front of the Eaton Centre onto which La'An and Kirk emerge in "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" is Yonge-Dundas Square, although the plaza's name does not appear in the episode.
