Tokenism was the practice of making a symbolic effort to do a particular thing, such as recruiting someone from a minority group in order to give the appearance of equality or fairness.

In 2371, Commander Chakotay, after having been given permission by Captain Kathryn Janeway to speak freely, stated to her that he had no intention of being her token Maquis officer. (VOY: "Parallax")

In approximately 3074, a Kyrian arbiter wanted The Doctor's backup module arrested and charged for his crimes, as The Doctor was believed to be a war criminal due to the holographic program The Voyager Encounter which depicted him as such. A Vaskan arbiter said it was not her decision to make, and she claimed that she was only on the commission because the Vaskans needed a token Kyrian. Quarren interjected that the issue was not about race, but the Kyrian arbiter stated that it was always about race; that Vaskans seized every opportunity to keep themselves in power.
