Thermal roll

The thermal roll was a type of maneuver by which the velocity of a starship was slowed as she rotated around her major axis.

In 3189, during atmospheric entry into The Colony's atmosphere, the high velocity of the USS Discovery threatened it with disintegration in fifteen seconds. To avoid this fate, per the recommendation of Lieutenant Keyla Detmer, the Discovery performed a thermal roll with the shields absorbing some of the heat from the reentry. (DIS: "Far From Home")
