The Scarlet Letter was a novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. It was about a woman who wore the titular marking as an emblem of shame.

James T. Kirk and La'An Noonien-Singh were both familiar with the work. (SNW: "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow")

The woman in question is Hester Prynne, though she was not named in the episode.
