Teratogenic coolant

Teratogenic coolant was a type of coolant. It was brown in color and sticky in texture. (PIC: "Maps and Legends")

The USS Enterprise-A employed teratogenic coolants in main engineering. A chemical toxicity label warned: "In the event of rupture or breach of teratogenic coolant feed, a chemical hazard alert protocol must be initiated. Environmental suits must be donned by any personnel remaining the area." (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country)

The coolant was used for the subspace warp field propulsion system on mid-24th century Federation starships, including the USS Enterprise-D. It prevented the engines from overheating by removing excess heat. Engineers were taught safety measures in technical manuals such as Teratogenic Coolant Safety Protocol when working around and with this gas. (TNG: "Booby Trap", okudagram)

The term was first used in 1982 in the novelization of Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan and again in 1987 in Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise.
Mike Okuda indicated that he "borrowed" the term for the engineering labels for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country from Vonda McIntyre's Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan novel. [1]
