A tartan was any plaid pattern associated with a particular Scottish clan.

Montgomery Scott wore a tartan kilt as part of his dress uniform. (TOS: "The Savage Curtain")

The producers obtained fabric with the actual Scott tartan for Scotty's uniform.(The World of Star Trek, 3rd ed., p. 94)
