Stolen T88s

The T88 was a type of Starfleet diagnostic tool. In 2380, they had been recently introduced, and were common aboard starships such as the USS Vancouver, but not yet available aboard other ships such as the USS Cerritos. They were useful in both the engineering and medical departments, as they worked significantly faster than the tools they were designed to replace.

When Ensigns D'Vana Tendi and Sam Rutherford of the Cerritos were temporarily assigned to the Vancouver, they were each given a T88 to run diagnostics on the simulation mainframe, by their assigned officer, Lieutenant Commander Ron Docent. Docent, who upon seeing their enthusiasm, tells them that whoever finishes their diagnostics first will be able to keep their T88. Before returning to the Cerritos, both Tendi and Rutherford each stole a duffel bag full of T88s, both figuring they would be useful to have aboard their ship. (LD: "Cupid's Errant Arrow")

In 2381, a bag of T88s was among the various items that Ensign Brad Boimler's friends stashed on his former bunk after he had transferred to the USS Titan in the previous year. (LD: "Strange Energies")

Later that year, Lieutenant jgs Tendi, Rutherford, and Beckett Mariner used T88s in their attempt to determine which chip in the isolinear chip junction was faulty. (LD: "In the Cradle of Vexilon")

A promotional "Tech Corner!" review of the device was posted a week after the episode aired, by Star Trek on CBS All Access, describing the "All New T88". Based on the review's information, it had "increased diagnostic efficiency vs D53", and was further promoted as "from medical to engineering perfect for all your diagnostic needs!"
