Subtext

A subtext was a hidden theme running throughout a work of literature.

According to Trip Tucker, Superman was not shallow as Malcolm Reed claimed; rather, it was "laced" with metaphor" and consisted of "subtext layered on subtext". (ENT: "Shuttlepod One")
