Signal

A signal was a gesture or message that people would use to communicate with each other.

After an encounter with the omnipotent Q in 2364, Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise-D ordered that no station make use of transmitted signals or intercom, in an attempt to take Q by surprise. (TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint")
