A short story was a brief fictional story, less lengthy than a novel.

In 2450, an older Jake Sisko related to Melanie how, prior to his father's disappearance, he had been working for weeks on a short story that he struggled to perfect. Benjamin, in an attempt to distract him, suggested they view the Bajoran wormhole's subspace inversion together, after which Benjamin would read Jake's story and offer advice. This never happened, as Benjamin disappeared during the inversion, something for which Jake blamed himself. (DS9: "The Visitor")
