Shari yn Yem

Shari yn Yem was a female Pandronian who worked for Starfleet as a drill administrator in the late 24th century. Her role was to test starship crews with individualized holographic training drills, using simulator holopods. She had a wide assortment of drill simulations available, which she created based on various events previously experienced by Starfleet personnel.

In 2381, Yem was in danger of losing her position because the crews of larger starships invariably passed their drills without much trouble, bringing the necessity of the drill program into question. To demonstrate otherwise, she needed to have a starship fail and plotted to ensure this by subtly rigging the simulations. Yem selected the "insignificant" California-class USS Cerritos for her scheme, because Captain Carol Freeman had accidentally left four of her ensigns stranded for six hours while answering a distress call. Yem was unconcerned that her actions would cause Starfleet Command to relegate and reassign the entire complement of the Cerritos.

As Yem planned, almost the entire Cerritos crew failed their drills. Freeman and Ensign Beckett Mariner initially thought that this outcome was meant to be a bonding exercise, but Yem enlightened them to her true intentions. Though there was no way for the crew members who had already failed to change their scores, Ensign Brad Boimler was still attempting his simulation in pursuit of a perfect score and Yem could not submit the final scores to Starfleet until he finished. Thus, Freeman ordered Boimler to prolong his drill, Borg Encounter, until they dealt with Yem.

Freeman accused Yem of having no real understanding of starship operations due to her lack of field experience. She proceeded to take the Cerritos into close encounters with a Crystalline Entity and a "temporal" black hole, confident in her crew's abilities but knowing Yem would be greatly alarmed. When Freeman threatened to take her through more dangerous anomalies, a panicked Yem conceded Freeman's point and changed the Cerritos' score to a passing 100%. (LD: "I, Excretus")

Yem ultimately suffered a poly-heart attack as a result of the ordeal. After departing the Cerritos, she elected to end her career with Starfleet, citing "on the job stress". (LD: "I, Excretus", "Trusted Sources")
