Sampaguita
The Sampaguita was a homemade racing ship designed and built by Sam Rutherford during his freshman year at Starfleet Academy in 2371. The Sampaguita was funded by winning races such as the Devron 500, but was ultimately the last of several "sick racing ships" he built in his personal garage. It was during the construction a key component overheated and exploded, causing Rutherford to suffer significant injuries, particularly to the left side of his face. At the time, it was to be the "fastest racer in the quadrant." The accident led to the Sampaguita never being completed because Lieutenant Commander Les Buenamigo used an oculus to erase Rutherford's memories of him and an illegal program that would ultimately become the Texas-class, leading to Rutherford coming out with a more straight-laced personality and forgetting about the ship. Rutherford's future self deemed it "a seat strapped to an impulse engine", rather than a true ship. (LD: "Reflections", "The Stars At Night")
In the mindscape where Rutherford's two personalities competed for control of his body, the younger Rutherford completed the construction of the Sampaguita, which he raced against the older version of himself, who piloted the Delta Flyer with the help of manifestations of Brad Boimler, Beckett Mariner and D'Vana Tendi. The completed ship had Vulcan inverters, quad engines, and was equipped with shields. Ultimately, the Sampaguita was destroyed by a Romulan warbird, but the Delta Flyer beamed the younger Rutherford out and won the race. (LD: "Reflections")
The Sampaguita's name was presumably derived from the Tagalog name for the flower Jasminum sambac, which is the national flower of the Philippines.
