S'smarith

S'smarith was a word used by Deanna Troi while discussing the difficulty of communicating without a common language to Jean-Luc Picard.

During the exchange, Troi held up a cup she was drinking from, and posited to her captain "We are stranded on a planet. We have no language in common, but I want to teach you mine. S'smarith. What did I just say?"

Picard guessed that she had meant cup, or glass. But Troi noted that she might have meant liquid, or clear, or brown, or hot, thus making her point. (TNG: "The Ensigns of Command")

Troi's point mirrors an existing thought experiment using the word Gavagai, which may or may not mean rabbit.
