Root language

A root language was a language from which other languages in the same language family derived.

In 2365, Jean-Luc Picard asked Data to compare basic words from the Dinasian, Dewan, and Iccobar languages, in order to reconstruct their possible root language. The android was able to do so, proving that the Iconian language was the root for these three languages. (TNG: "Contagion")
