Role playing was a type of sexual game in which adults dressed up and pretended to be other people.

In 2375, upon encountering the mirror universe version of Ezri Tigan, Quark mistook her for Ezri Dax, and surmised that she was role playing, given her clothing, the knife she was carrying, and her markedly aggressive persona. He then suggested she call him Shmun, while he called her T'lana, after characters from the erotic holonovel, Vulcan Love Slave, Volume III. (DS9: "The Emperor's New Cloak")
