A role was a comprehensive pattern of behavior that was socially recognized.

In 2367, asked by William T. Riker if he was nervous prior to Miles O'Brien and Keiko Ishikawa's impending nuptials, Data replied, "I cannot become nervous, sir. However, I do sense a certain anticipation regarding my role in the wedding." (TNG: "Data's Day")
