Rhizome

A rhizome was a horizontal, usually underground plant stem that would often send out roots and shoot from its nodes.

While on a survey mission to Surata IV in 2365, a rhizomatic plant stung William T. Riker on the leg, infecting him with a microorganism. (TNG: "Shades of Gray")
