Return beacon

A return beacon was a portable device that could be used to signal an away team to prepare to beam out.

In 2382, Lieutenant junior grades Brad Boimler and Sam Rutherford disguised a return beacon as a necklace for Beckett Mariner, D'Vana Tendi, and T'Lyn to use on their mission to Dilmer III. As the planet had a pre-industrial civilization and a planetary core that created time dilation on the surface, the away team needed to move somewhere that they wouldn't be seen to beam out in order to avoid breaking the Prime Directive. However, a transporter mishap resulted in the team spending a year of relative time on the surface before Boimler and Rutherford got the USS Cerritos' transporter working again. The two activated the beacon and, after giving the girls enough time to move away from the Dilmerians, beamed them aboard the Cerritos. (LD: "Fully Dilated")
