Registration beam

A registration beam was an automatic signal that transmitted basic information about a vessel and its origin.

In 2266, the USS Enterprise found an unidentified vessel which was not transmitting a registration beam and would soon overload its engines in its attempt to escape. Spock was unable to determine if it was from Earth or not because of the lack of beam. (TOS: "Mudd's Women")
