Pragmatism

Pragmatism and practicality dealt with the sensible, reasonable, logical, and realistic actionable or practical use, rather than theory of what was possible, of an idea or object, and the likely probable successfulness and effectiveness of such use.

In 2268, tribbles reminded Lieutenant Commander Spock of the lilies of the field in that "They toil not, neither do they spin. But they seem to eat a great deal." Spock concluded that he saw no practical use for them. Doctor Leonard McCoy questioned if everything had to have a practical use for Spock and noted that tribbles were nice, soft, furry, and made a pleasant sound. Spock argued that an ermine violin would too but he saw no advantage in having one. (TOS: "The Trouble with Tribbles")
