A playoff was a tournament held at the end of a sport's regular season to determine the champion.

In 2376, during his stay on Kelemane's planet, The Doctor recalled seeing the original Torelius defend for Mountain against Red River in their sport's playoffs. (VOY: "Blink of an Eye")
