Platform

A platform was a flat surface upon which a person or object could stand. Metaphorically, it was any situation that was a means to getting a different position or title.

In 2268, James T. Kirk, Spock and Leonard McCoy knelt as Natira stepped onto a pentagonal platform and knelt in front of an obelisk with a sun-burst on it. (TOS: "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky")
