Pike Maneuver

"We pull this off, it's officially the Pike Maneuver."

A diagram showing the Pike Maneuver

The "Pike Maneuver" was the name devised and informally given by Lieutenant Erica Ortegas to a maneuver invented by Starfleet Captain Christopher Pike during a confrontation between the USS Enterprise and a Gorn vessel.

Given the tone in which Ortegas delivered the comment, it is reasonable to assume that it was meant as something of a joke.

In 2259, the USS Enterprise, which Pike commanded at that time, was on a mission to Finibus III. When they arrived, they found that the colonists of the planet were gone, before quickly finding that some of the colonists had survived and escaped on a vessel that was then in orbit of Finibus III.

Once the crew of the Enterprise discovered that the unidentified vessel carried surviving colonists, they extended a deep space transport tube and hooked up with the other vessel. However, the attackers of the colony, who turned out to be the Gorn, had been waiting for this moment when the Enterprise would have its shields down.

Initiating the maneuver

Having been hidden by a hologram near the second moon, the Gorn vessel attacked and severely damaged the Enterprise, forcing them into the atmosphere of a brown dwarf orbiting a black hole at the center of the Finibus system. Eventually, after the Enterprise took several more poundings by the Gorn, Pike decided to risk slingshotting around the black hole and dumping the AP 350 as a decoy. Luckily for the crew, the maneuver worked and the Enterprise, badly damaged though it was, escaped. (SNW: "Memento Mori")
